This is a collaborative space for our network to share resources related to accessibility and disability inclusion in philanthropic practices. This is not an exhaustive list; if you have a recommended resource to add, please let us know. This page is intended as a starting point for learning.
General Resources
- Disability & Philanthropy Forum
- MacArthur Foundation 100&Change: Disability Inclusion Guidelines
- Disability Inclusion in Philanthropy: A Working Paper for Grantmakers and the Consultants who Support their Work (National Network of Consultants to Grantmakers)
Event & Meeting Planning
- Different Types of Captioning (Hearing Loss Association of America) — about different types of captioning
- Keep in mind: Captioning is helpful to more than just people with hearing loss!
- Captioning Matters (National Court Reporters Association) — links to resources, including finding a professional captioner
- Wheelchair access: Meeting locations will largely be ADA-complaint these days, but consider “ADA-compliant” the floor, not the ceiling, for accommodations. Whenever possible, tour the facility yourself before the event. Is the facility accommodating for those using a wheelchair, scooter, or walker — without being “othering”?
- Provide information in advance about how to make requests for modifications or auxiliary aids and the accessibility of the meeting.
Grantmaking
- From the Ford Foundation: Funder Guidance and Case Studies for Disability-Inclusive Grantmaking. (PDF, 25 pages)
- How can you more accurately track your grant funding for disability rights and justice? How can that information be shared to tell a broader story of change and impact? See Disability Rights & Justice: Tracking Funding for Systemic Change (PDF, 5 pages) from the Disability & Philanthropy Forum.
- Specific tips:
- If you require contact information on a form, consider that non-hearing people will not be able to accept a voice call. Consider providing options for preferred contact method, including text by phone, if you can accommodate.
Operations
- Iowa Summit on Disability Employment: Business Toolkit (Harkin Institute, 2021)
- Tool: Accessible color palette builder
- Website accessibility
- Use alt tags on photos and images
- Evaluate: Is your website accessible to blind/visually impaired people who use screenreaders? Are videos on your website captioned?
